Brightly painted houses on a cobbled Bo-Kaap street with Table Mountain behind

City Bowl

Bo-Kaap

Bo-Kaap is one of Cape Town's oldest neighbourhoods and the heart of its Cape Malay community. Alongside the painted houses are mosques, corner shops and home kitchens.

It is a lived-in neighbourhood, so go early, go quietly and ask before photographing people or their homes.

Tips for your visit

  • •Visit the Bo-Kaap Museum on Wale Street for the history behind the colours.
  • •Buy spices from a family shop rather than the stalls on the main corner.
  • •Avoid crowding doorsteps during prayer times.
