How we would spend a first day in the city: an early start, one big view, a long lunch and an easy evening.
Start early
Jet lag is your friend here. Go up Signal Hill or Table Mountain first thing, before the cloud and the queues arrive.
Walk the old city
Bo-Kaap, the Company's Garden and the streets around Greenmarket Square give you a feel for the city's history in a couple of hours.
Keep the afternoon slow
A long lunch, then sunset somewhere on the Atlantic side. Save the big drives for day two.
