Dawn light over Lion's Head and Cape Town from Signal Hill

Local guide

Where to watch the sunrise in Cape Town

Five spots we use for first light, from an easy drive up Signal Hill to a quiet beach on the False Bay side.

Why the east side matters

Cape Town faces west, so the sun rises behind the mountain for most of the city. To see it come up properly you either climb, or head to False Bay where the sun lifts straight out of the water.

Our favourite spots

Signal Hill is the easiest. You can drive almost to the top and watch the light hit Table Bay.

Lion's Head is the classic hike. Start about 90 minutes before sunrise and take a head torch.

Muizenberg and St James face east over False Bay. Bring coffee and watch the surfers paddle out.

Devil's Peak is quieter and steeper, for people who want the view to themselves.

A few practical things

Check the wind the night before. A strong south-easter makes the high spots unpleasant.

Winter sunrises are late, around 7:50am in June, so you do not have to start in the dark.
